American Beauty

District of Columbia official flower art print by artist Trae Mundt. American Beauty Rose

With all the beautiful flowers in our nation only a select few rise to the honor of being adopted as official flowers. As Americans we have a rich floral history. When I began my journey to research and illustrate our nation's state flowers I decided to include our national flower and capital flower in my America's Favorite Flowers art collection.

The American beauty rose was designated as Washington D.C.'s official flower by Commissioner's order  273,828 dated April 17, 1925. The city was named for our first president of the United States, George Washington. I was able to visit D.C. a few years ago. I was attending the conference hosted by the Portrait Society of America. It's a beautiful city. I hope to be able to return sometime soon.

The American beauty rose is known for its cup shaped flowers. I've learned it is no longer grown commercially. This flower is an American beauty.
